This is the first definitive book on contemporary Chinese furniture, intro-ducing the work of leading designers and design studios. It explains how the ‘New Wave’ of Chinese furniture designers are looking back to their cultural roots and revitalizing traditional forms, materials and techniques in order to produce interesting and exciting contemporary furniture.

Such interest has since grown widely in China. Indeed, it is central to the whole New Chinese Design pheno-menon, which takes pride in the nation’s remarkable cultural traditions and seeks to revitalize them.
在这个愿景下,朱子于2015年成立岁集家具,希望真正拥有一个品牌去运营自己的设计作品。他强调岁集扎根于当代生活,并着力完满生活中的功能美学,那些家具同时呈现出对“手工艺精神”的虔诚之情。由此,“岁集”的文化命脉是由数股涓涓细流汇聚形成的。
To this end, Zhu established the Suyab furniture company in 2015 to manufacture and distribute his own designs. Although his work is, as he puts it, ‘grounded in the contem-porary and explores the aesthetics of everyday functionality’, it also relies on ‘the soul of craftsmanship’.
混合精致的大理石、优良的皮革和美丽的树木,朱子的设计反照出中国文化里对顶配材质的热衷之情;另一面,家具形态取法减少主义和几何主义之内敛,展现鲜明充沛的当代审美意趣。
Incorporating exquisitely grained marbles, high-quality leather and beautiful woods, Zhu’s designs reflect the Chinese obsession with high-end luxury materials, yet the forms he uses are refreshingly contemporary in their aesthetic reductivism and geometric restraint.

如中国众多一线家具品牌那样,岁集也是从成功的空间设计工作室脱胎而来,它孕育于朱子于2001年成立的“岁悦”设计工作室,工作室坐落于广州美术学院内,有着十数载的别墅整体设计经验。在朱子完成的这些别墅住宅里,定制家具是整体设计密不可分的一部分,这也是朱子创立“岁集”的一个天然因子。2015年,朱子正式成立高级家具设计及制作公司,以运营他的家具作品。
Like so many of the leading furniture brands in China, Suyab - or Sui Ji, as it is known in Chinese - evolved out of a successful interior-design studio. It arose from Zhu Zi’s Sui Yue Design Company, which specialized in the interior design of luxury villas, for which it would often create bespoke furniture. It was a natural progression for Zhu to expand on this type of work by founding his own high-end furniture manufacturing company in 2015.
朱子希望创造适合现代生活方式,又有着东方气质的原创家具。巧克力棕实木、米金黄铜、暖橙真皮,在岁集空间,我们会置身于一片“暖调轻奢”的调子里,这个调子也体现了亚洲文明对和暖、馥郁色调的喜爱。在这个调性里,岁集家具渗出自己的文化动机和设计思考。
His aim was to create pieces with a distinctive originality and oriental aesthetic suited to modern lifestyles. Much of his furniture exudes a sense of warm-toned luxury, which reflects the Asian preference for warmer and richer colour palettes when it comes to home decoration, while at the same time his designs reference Chinese materials and motifs.
比如说他的“之间茶几”,几面以暖调琉璃砖拼配而成,看来就像一块大琥珀,玲珑动魄。在中国古代,琥珀亦作“虎魄”,被视为是由老虎流下的眼泪凝固而成,就似封存了这些大家伙的勇气,是人们心中的圣物。与之相较,“算椅”的黑檀木椅背玩味地使用了算珠子的意象,趣味与端庄共融。另一件家具“一轮”圆柜,圆面边缘内嵌了一轮亮光,与纵横交织的木线一道,似象征着中国人“天圆地方”的朴素宇宙观。
His In-Between tea table, for instance, incor-porates a top made of glass blocks that look like slabs of amber, a nod to the ancient Chinese belief that amber was composed of fossilized tiger tears, which encap-sulated the courage of these big cats. By contrast, the back section of his dark wood and leather Song armchair playfully takes the form of a giant abacus, while his circular display cabinet, with its small, light-filtering gap, symbolically evokes ‘the circle of heaven’.

瞿铮
瞿铮 Jack 是留英建筑师,2010年回国之际,Jack 敏锐地意识到祖国本土的高质量设计正不断涌现。决心改变西方人对“中国制造”的僵硬观念,他于2013年在伦敦成立中国设计中心,锐意推广“好中之好”的中国当代设计。自此,他在欧洲组织了超过50场展览活动,日积月累中让西方观众对中国文化和中国设计有一个更准确、对位的了解。是一位值得被书写的文化使者。
